Why has Algeria recalled its ambassador to France?

the essential Algiers decided on Saturday to recall “for consultations” its ambassador in Paris, a gesture which was not immediately explained but is part of a context of increased tensions with France.

“Algeria recalls its ambassador (Mohamed Antar-Daoud, editor’s note) in Paris for consultations and a press release will be broadcast on the subject,” said public television, showing on the screen a short text in Arabic from the Algerian presidency.

An article from the World at the heart of tensions?

The local media widely took up on Saturday an article in the journa l Le Monde where French President Emmanuel Macron believes that after his independence in 1962, Algeria was built on “a memorial rent”, maintained by “the politico-military system”.

Emmanuel Macron, who spoke while receiving descendants of protagonists of the Algerian war, also evokes “an official history”, according to him, “completely rewritten” which “is not based on truths” but on “a speech based on hatred of France “.

Reduction of visas

On Wednesday, French Ambassador François Gouyette was summoned to the Algerian Foreign Ministry to be notified of “a formal government protest” after Paris’ decision to halve the visas granted to Algerians wishing to travel to France. Paris announced on Tuesday a sharp decrease in the number of visas granted to nationals of Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia citing a “refusal” by these Maghreb countries to issue the consular passes necessary for the return of immigrants returned from France .

“This decision, which took place without prior consultation with the Algerian party, contains the crippling anomaly of having been the subject of a media hype generating confusion and ambiguity as to its motivations and its scope. “, estimated the Algerian ministry to justify the summons of Mr. Gouyette.

According to the Algerian media, the recall of the Algerian ambassador to Paris is motivated this time by statements by the President, repeated in an article published on Saturday morning by the French newspaper Le Monde.

This is the second time that Algiers has summoned its ambassador to Paris since May 2020 when the then ambassador, Salah Lebdioui, was recalled “immediate” after the broadcast of a documentary on Hirak, broadcast on France 5 and the parliamentary channel.
