(AFP) – The legendary British rock band Queen opened a pop-up store in London on Tuesday, on the occasion of the five decades of the group which still performs despite the death of singer Freddie Mercury in 1991.
Called “Queen The Greatest”, the store is bringing back visitors in the beginnings of the formation created in 27 and whose hits are known all over the world (“Bohemian Rhapsody”, “We Are The Champions” , “Don’t Stop Me Now”).
In several universes installed on two levels, the store traces their journey through the years 2010, through their legendary concerts and tours of the years 1980.
Open for only three months on the main shopping strip of Carnaby Street, it’s a short walk from the store of another cult British band, the Rolling Stones.
T- shirts, posters, vinyls in limited editions alongside more i nsolites like a colorful Rubik’s cube with the faces of the band members, socks adorned with guitars or a special “Queen” edition of the famous Monopoly board game.
In the basement , guitars signed by Brian May and a one-of-a-kind “Queen” pinball machine instead create fan club tunes, while concert footage is projected onto a wall. In the background, the group’s greatest hits like “We Will Rock You” or “Killer Queen”.
“I think that for a Queen fan, it’s a incredible opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of Queen, to know that you can come here to chat with people who share your love for the group (…) and also be able to find memories, “Keith told AFP Taperell, vice president of retail and sales at Bravado, the derivative company within the Universal Music group.
Despite the death in November 1991 by Freddie Mercury, suffering from AIDS, the group continued to exist, and resumed touring in 2005 and 2008 with singer and musician Paul Rodgers.
Since 2012, Adam Lambert, discovered thanks to the American Idol telecrochet, is their singer. He has been on several tours around the world with the last two founding members of the band, guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor.
En 2018, the film Bohemian Rhapsody, retracing the history of the group, had collected four Oscars including that of best actor for Rami Malek in the role of Freddie Mercury.
