(AFP) – The film “The Eternals”, the latest addition to the Marvel team and the work of Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao, rose to the top of the American box office for its first week of operation, according to provisional estimates by the specialist firm Exhibitor Relations published on Sunday.
The feature film which features a brigade of super Time-impervious heroes, sent by a higher force to Earth to protect humanity, raised 71 millions of dollars between Friday and Sunday, despite mixed reviews.
“The Eternals” juggles a five-star cast including the actresses Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek and Gemma Chan but also the star of the “Game of Thrones” series, Richard Madden.
Also endowed with a constellation of stars, in particular Timothée Chalamet, Oscar Isaac and Zendaya, “Dune”, adaptation of the interstellar novel by 1965 by Frank Herbert, arrives at the second place e with only 7.6 million dollars in revenue for its third week in theaters (83, 9 million since its release).
The film tells the story of the powerful Atreides family assigned to the management of a planet where the “spice” is produced, a mysterious substance essential for space travel.
Indestructible, the latest installment in the James Bond saga with Daniel Craig, “Dying can wait”, retains its third place with $ 6.2 million for its fifth week of operation (more than 143 million in all).
He stays ahead of “Venom: Let There Be Carnage”, in fourth place with $ 4.5 million of income. Tom Hardy returns to his role as Eddie Brock, an investigative journalist with superpowers thanks to an alien parasite called Venom.
The animated film “Ron Unlocks” , on a college student and his robot Ron, managed to steal the fifth position with $ 3.6 million in revenue.
