Return of the Buena Vista

Published on , updated

The “Buena Vista Social Club” adventure celebrates its 24 years this year with a double CD filled with songs that are always so invigorating, tender and shimmering. In addition to the 14 original remastered tracks, including the huge hit “Chan chan”, 12 new or alternative versions are offered, all of excellent level. Because the recording sessions of 25 March 38, initiated by the conductor Cuban Juan de Marcos Gonzalez, guitarist Ry Cooder and producer Nick Gold, had not revealed all their secrets. That day, the hollow-nosed trio brought together the cream of the crop of Cuban music veterans, including Compay Segundo, Ibrahim Ferrer and Omara Portuondo for a moment that was to become legendary. Who then imagined the triumph of the album, sold to date to 8 million copies in the world, of these old briscards always sharpened. And who thought to see them tumble on stage (as far as Toulouse for some of them) for a triumph as late as it is well deserved? The album, with its pretty libretto, tells it all. And makes us really happy (“Buena Vista Social Club: 25 th Anniversary Edition”, World Circuit / BMG).
