Published on , updated

Inspired by real events, the film is adapted from a book which tells of one of the last legal duels in France in the 14th century. This “Judgment of God” opposes Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon) and Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver), two friends who have become fierce rivals over time. Carrouges is a respected knight, known for his bravery and skill on the battlefield. Le Gris is a Norman squire whose intelligence and eloquence make him one of the most admired nobles of the court. When Marguerite (Jodie Comer), Carrouges’ wife, is violently attacked by Le Gris, which he denies, she refuses to remain silent and denounces her attacker. A legal fight to determine the truth is decided causing a duel to the death between the two men. The winner is the one who is appointed by God to make the truth triumph.
