Migration crisis at EU borders: Belarus says it “will respond severely” to any attack

Belarus warned on Friday that it would “respond severely” to any attack targeting it, denouncing the deployment of large military personnel by Poland on the Polish-Belarusian border, in the midst of a migratory crisis. “It seems that our neighbors in the West, in particular, Poland (…), are ready to start a conflict in which they would like to draw Europe,” Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin said in video message.

“The Belarusian armed forces are ready to respond severely to any attack,” he warned.

Thousands of migrants wanting to go to the EU have been stranded for several days at the border between Belarus and Poland.

15 000 Polish military

Faced with the influx of people to its doors, Poland, a member country of the EU and of the Schengen area, has deployed some 15 000 military and erected a fence topped with barbed wire. In this context, Brussels, which accuses Minsk of orchestrating this migratory influx in revenge for Western sanctions against the regime of President Alexander Lukashenko, raised the threat of new sanctions which could be announced next week.

“The language of ultimatums, threats and blackmail is unacceptable”, for his part warned Viktor Khrenine.

“Attempts to intimidate or accuse us without merit forces us to react adequately to this situation,” he asserted, assuring that the Belarusian armed forces could “ensure the security of the country, including – if necessary – with our main strategic ally, Russia “. Russia is Belarus’ main ally, and conducted military maneuvers with the Belarusian army near the border on Friday.
