Massacre of the monks of Tibhirine: the last surviving monk is dead

The last survivor of the Tibhirine massacre is dead. Father Jean-Pierre Schumacher died on Sunday at 97 years old. “He died in serenity at the monastery of Notre-Dame de l’Atlas, in Midelt”, announced the Christian Church of Morocco. He will be buried in Morocco on Tuesday 23 November.

Four years after the slaughter of the Tibhirine monastery, Father Jean-Pierre Schumacher had settled in Morocco where he had become the prior of a less Trappist community of the Cistercian Order in the Moroccan Atlas.

In 1996, seven months of the Tibhirine monastery had been removed. Their decapitated heads were found on a road two months after their abduction. A statement from the Armed Islamic Group (GIA) announced their assassination, in the midst of civil war in Algeria. Twenty-five after the massacre, the circumstances of the Tibhirine massacre have still not been clarified. An investigation by the French justice system had pointed out the troubled role of the Algerian secret services.

The less of Tibhirine were beatified by Pope Francis in 2018.
