Carcassonne. The committed and ecofeminist texts of the MAN and The Maniacs group

the essential The group MAN & The Maniacs is releasing their eponymous debut album on 27 next October. A project carried by the Carcassonnaise singer-songwriter Marina Anne Nolles. Interview.

She has everything a great. The talent, the look, the attitude, the talk. It is easy to imagine him roaming Parisian theaters and the TV sets that go with it. She is Marina Anne Nolles. She takes center stage with MAN & The Maniacs. On 27 October, the band released their self-titled debut album. A nine-track opus entirely composed in Carcassonne. One thing is certain, it will make some noise. A few days before her release, the singer-songwriter opens the doors to her spicy and sweet universe. And with the young and very nice Marina, familiarity is inevitably customary.

Like Obelix, you fell in when you were little …

That’s right ! I started singing when I was very young. I took some piano and singing lessons. But it was really when I was 20 that I started seriously playing guitar and writing songs. Eight years ago, when I arrived in Carcassonne, I decided to do music full time. To make it my job. Initially in 2014, I started solo with a guitarist and computer-assisted music. We went through the Dame de Canton in Paris, the Iboat in Bordeaux, the Lighthouse in Toulouse in the first part of Ayo. And then at one point, I wanted a group with real musicians. In 2018, I then assembled a team of professional musicians: Romain Thorel (keyboard and body), Arnaud Beyney (guitar) and Elodie Longuemart (chorus and drums). This is where it all begins for MAN and The Maniacs…

Before the musicians joined the project, you already had your universe… How did the coordination of your respective worlds go?

This project, we carried out on the two phases of containment. Everything stopped. We were lucky to be all available. So we took the time to get to know each other better. We played a whole bunch of songs. We discussed our tastes for a long time. It was necessary to be able to take the next step: to compose and create together. During the first session in Carcassonne, something happened. It was dazzling. In 4 days, we created 4 songs…

What colors will this album have?

We will be able to feel all our influences. From Florence and The Machines, to Alabama Shake via the Black Keys. Without forgetting the seventies, a bit in the Jefferson Airplaines style. What we do is protest pop, a little psychedelic voodou rock à la Jimi Hendrix with committed and ecofeminist lyrics. Spicy lyrics, sometimes shocking but always with a soft and suave voice. This contrast is also found in the music with ethereal phases then, much more violent.

This first opus will, among other things, serve as a support for you to get noticed and hit the Parisian anthill …

It is the objective ! We would really like it to take on another dimension. We’re planning a tour for next year. With the objective of making a lot of dates in Paris and ideally, a date at the festival of the City of Carcassonne. We had the chance to play there two years ago in the first part of Clara Lucciani. Before that, we are playing on 13 next November at the Kutur’elles festival in Conques.
